Psycho is one of those fantastic films that one is ashamed to say they haven’t seen as it appears almost everybody has. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh, the film is an adaptation of a 1959 novel of the same name, written by Robert Bloch. The novel itself was loosely based on the criminal activities of Ed Gein, an American murderer and grave robber. The film focuses on an encounter between a secretary hiding at an isolated motel after stealing money from her employer, and the motel’s disturbed owner. The two characters are Marion Crane and Norman Bates played by Leigh and Perkins.

Called “the first psychoanalytical thriller”, Psycho was a pioneering film in the sex and violence it included. French film critic Serge Kaganski wrote of it: “The shower scene is both feared and desired. Hitchcock may be scaring his female viewers out of their wits, but he is turning his male viewers into potential rapists, since Janet Leigh has been turning men on every since she appeared in her brassiere in the first scene”. Goya’s works were marvellous commentaries and chronicles of the era in which he lived, serving as court painter to the Spanish crown. Goya’s thematic range was vast. His themes evolved from merry festivals, the royal family, and draft cartoons, to war scenes and human debasement. Goya’s temper darkened as time went on and this is reflected in his thematic change. Modern physicians believe that the lead in his paint pigments may have caused the deafness which began in 1792. Towards the culmination of his life, Goya began producing frightening paintings of fantasy and insanity.

Goya painted 14 Black Paintings in oil directly onto the plaster walls of his house and he certainly did not intend them to exhibited as he never spoke of them nor wrote of them, they were in fact discovered 50 years after he died. In 1874. The Black Paintings included many references to witchcraft and to war, but not led gu10 lightbulbs!

Oh My God! What a scary film!!! I nearly peed my pants - but it is brilliant!

It was one of those films that you can’t tear your eyes away from but you are so scared.
Even the opening music I was so creepy I wanted to let my Diesel Shoes run me straight out there!

The film is about a family who shortly after moving into a new house discover that dark spirits have been plaguing their son.

It is from the makers of SAW and Paranormal Activities. I would give it 4 stars as it was a really scary film and did what it said on the tin.

The final SAW film in the series is going to be released here at the end of October.
The twisted and sometimes disturbing end of the Saw films will be in 3D and see the return of Jigsaw and some of his survivors from the previous films.
Tobin Bell reprises his role as Jigsaw and Dr Gordon, played by Carly Elwes, who was in the first Saw is also on board.
Expect more brutal deaths, tense decisions and lots of gore!
